NIHONTO (JAPANESE SWORD) LECTURE
DATES: August 15th, 2026 TIME: 2:00-4:30 PM LOCATION: Arching Oaks Classroom LECTURE TOPICS: This presentation will explore the evolution of the Japanese sword from chokuto to tachi to katana, highlighted with a discussion around types of sword koshirae (mountings). Period swords will be presented. Following will be a presentation of early ron sword guards; their use, construction, major traditions, and decoration. Taken together, the talk aims at emphasizing the Japanese warrior, his cultural beliefs and persona during times of war and before the lasting peace of 1615 . REGISTRATION FEE: $10 per person YOUR INSTRUCTOR: MARK CESKAVICH Mark is a Deland, Florida resident. His present and past memberships in Japanese Sword related associations include The Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (NBTHK)-American branch, Kokusai Tosogu Kai, New York Token Kai, Florida Token Kai, and Japanese Sword Society of the United States. His study of Nihonto began in the 1980s and he remains active in the Southeast Japanese Sword community. |
