8 WEEK JAPANESE GRAMMAR COURSE: 
8 sessions.  Sundays from 4:30-5:30pm
September 13th - November 1st, 2026
Maximum Number of Students: 10

CLASS FEE (for all 8 sessions): 
$40 for existing Florida Budokan members
$55 for non-members

Please be sure that you are able to commit to all class sessions so that you can get the most of out the instruction presented!

COURSE OVERVIEW & OUTLINE:
This course will provide the student with the basics of Japanese grammar.  This is not a conversational class, but you will learn how to form sentences quickly with the basics rquired for learning how to speak Japanese.  This course will include weekly homework assignments so that you can practice the information that you learn each week.

Week 1: Pronunciation of Japanese vowels, the Japanese Syllabaries and Kanji.  A list of 170 of the most common verbs will be used for practice.  Resources for vocabulary.
Week 2: Japanese Verbs and Verb Bases.  Continuing with the verb list supplied in week 1, learn how to easily identify the three types of verbs and how to form the verb bases which will allow you to quickly expand your ability to form sentences.
Week 3: Forming Polite Verbs. This lesson will allow you to quickly form the polite forms of verbs.  This will include how to form present positive, present negative, past positive and past negative forms of verbs.
Week 4: Japanese Particles, Interrogatives, and Creating Simple Sentences and Questions.
Week 5: Using the Japanese Verb Bases.  Creating more complex sentences utilizing the verb list and verb bases.
Week 6: Expressing Locations in Japanese.
Week 7: "Te" and "Ta" Forms of Japanese Verbs.
Week 8: Counting and Dates in Japanese.

Jonathan Forrester started studying Japanese at the University of Tennessee in 1982.  He taught an Adult Education course in Japanese grammar at East Tennessee State University for a year and lived and worked in Japan for Texas Instruments and Siemens Energy and Automation for one and half years.  He has since visited the country at least 15 times.  He has taught basic grammar to high school students who were interested in Japanese Culture at South Sumter High School.  Additionally, Jonathan is an avid martial artist holding Dan ranks in Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Kobudo, Iaido and Kyudo.
