His connection with Japanese kites began in 1987, when Tadakazu Funasaki and the Kumamoto Kite Society invited him to participate in the Mt. Aso Kite Festival in Kyushu, Japan. Back in the United States, Wayne searched for English-language books on Japanese kites but found little. Although Japanese authors had written extensively about kites, most of the material was available only in Japanese. Wayne made several more trips to Japan. His final visit was arranged through Masaaki Modegi of the Japanese Kite Association. During a month-long stay, he traveled the length of Japan, visiting and staying with both amateur and master kite makers. The result of twelve years of research was his book, Kites of Japan. Wayne also came to understand that Japanese kites are more than beautiful art forms: they are an integral expression of Japanese culture. |
