ARTIST STATEMENT: TAKUYA MINAGAWA
"As a traditional Japanese garden craftsman, I respect the past, protect the present, and pass it on to the future!
In the past, "gardeners" were called "garden carpenters" as they were skilled in various creative crafts. In order to preserve this forgotten expression for the future, I am expanding my activities throughout Japan and overseas to carry out comprehensive activities centered on gardens as "garden carpenters" while fulfilling my mission as a gardener. My current activities are centered on traditional Japanese garden styles and techniques, and are expanding nationwide in the creation and maintenance of new gardens. Of course, in Kyoto, the center of Japanese gardens, we are also working hard to train young gardeners with solid skills and knowledge by maintaining and managing traditions at famous temples and Kyoto townhouses, for the future of Japanese gardens. In terms of maintenance methods for traditional gardens, we work in collaboration with various garden researchers, including Chisei Shigemori, and use the abundant materials from the past to incorporate academic methods by comparing the on-site with actual measurements and photographs from before and after the war. In addition to Japan, we also participated in the creation of a Japanese garden in Holland Park, London in 1991, and regularly maintain and manage it. Furthermore, we are actively expanding beyond Japan to meet the demand for traditional gardens around the world, including the creation and management of gardens in Taiwan."
