Have you ever wanted to learn how to sew the beautiful stitched style Japanese Bound books?
The word in Japanese for bookbinding is seihon. In this method, the bindings are secured through the front and back covers rather than along the spine. Japanese Stab Binding was the method used for most books created during the Edo Period in Japan (1600–1868), and it was the primary form of commercial binding until the 1890s when it was replaced with western spine bound books. Japanese Stab Binding is an easy and decorative way to make photo albums, journals, and so much more. Stab binding originated in the 1600's and is a process where you use an awl or sharp object to make four holes in the spine and sew decorative patterns through the holes to design a book. The process is low cost, requires simple tools and no machinery. In this class you will make multiple books and learn different sewing patterns to bind them. The covers will be created from several handmade papers. This process makes beautiful journals and gifts and there are many sewing patterns to explore. Please bring a lunch for the break There is a $15 materials fee for this class that is payable directly to the instructor. This fee is not included in the registration cost.
