Bon Odori (Bon Dance) Class

Festivals are held all over Japan during the summer. At that time, everyone in the venue dances the Bon Odori.  Bon Odori has the following purposes:
  1. To welcome and honor ancestors
  2. To strengthen community bonds
  3. To express gratitude for the harvest and blessings of nature

​In this program, you will experience Bon Odori dancing to the famous Japanese song, Tokyo Ondo. It is very simple and not difficult at all. Let's enjoy dancing in a circle with everyone.

Your Instructor:
​Mayumi Soeda Sensei is from Nagasaki Japan and has a strong passion for Japanese language and literature. She has a master's degree in linguistics from Nagasaki University and a bachelor’s degree in Japanese literature from Kumamoto University. Soeda Sensei has been a licensed teacher for middle and high school Japanese literature for 32 years and specializes in teaching Japanese language at the university level. Furthermore, she also successfully passed the Japanese Language Teaching Competency Test, demonstrating her expertise in this field. In addition to her teaching qualifications, Mayumi San is a Japanese calligraphy instructor (Shodo) with a 5 Dan level of expertise in calligraphy with a Level 2 achievement in the Kanji Proficiency Exam. She is married and has 2 grown children.
